Tour Plan
Days 1 and 2 | Salina to Colorado Springs
On Day 1, depart by motor coach and travel through Missouri into Kansas to overnight. On Day 2, continue west to Colorado Springs, where we check into our hotel for 2 nights. (Day 2 - B)
Day 3 | Colorado Springs
Start the day with an 8.9-mile ride on the Pike’s Peak Cog Railway. Here we see the vistas that inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write her poem “America the Beautiful.” We visit the Garden of the Gods Trading Post for lunch with time to shop for Native American art. We tour the Garden of the Gods with a local guide. Visit the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings, where you can walk through the homes of ancient Native Americans. (B,L)
Day 4 | Canon City - Alamosa
This morning begins at the U.S. Air Force Academy. At Canon City, we board the Royal Gorge Route Railroad that chugs along the gorge of the Arkansas River. Cross the river on the hanging bridge and look up to the suspension bridge overhead. Lunch onboard. Overnight in Alamosa. (B,L)
Day 5 | Antonito to Farmington
“All aboard” the 1880 Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad departing from Antonito this morning! There is no diner on the train, so enjoy a delicious lunch at the Osier station before continuing to Chama, New Mexico and then to Farmington to overnight. (B,L)
Day 6 | Four Corners to Durango
Travel to Four Corners, located on the Navajo Reservation, where four states meet at one point. Continue to Mesa Verde National Park to view cliff ruins of the Anasazi. A local guide will take us through the most famous ruin sites. Overnight in the Old West mining town of Durango after a delightful chuckwagon dinner and entertainment. (B,D)
Day 7 | Colorado Rockies to Gunnison
We board the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a 45-mile, 3½ - hour rail journey through the Colorado Rockies. In Silverton, enjoy free time to shop and have lunch. Enjoy the scenic views along the “Million Dollar Highway” en route to Gunnison. (B,D)
Day 8 | Colorado Rockies to Westminster
Wake up this morning in the Rockies. Travel to historic Leadville for lunch and our final rail excursion, where we board the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad. Continue to Westminster, our home for two nights. (B)
Day 9 | Rocky Mountain National Park
This morning we venture into the resort village of Estes Park, where you have time to visit the unique shops. Drive over Trail Ridge Road, through Rocky Mountain National Park. We will stop for lunch, on your own at the Alpine Falls Visitor Center. See glacial Lake Granby and experience Berthoud Pass. Many stops during the day will provide the opportunity for magnificent photos. (B)
Days 10 and 11 | Salina to Return Home
On Day 10 we begin our journey home and this evening, enjoy a farewell dinner. Day 11 will take you back to your departure points with memories of the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. (Day 10 - B,D / Day 11 - B)
